A SPACE INVITATION.
By P.J. LE SUEUR

I have fifteen heads and sixteen legs
And come from Outer Space,
To answer an invitation from
The noble human race.
I was circling round the moons of Bree
In the galaxy of Greer,
When a faint transmission came from Earth:
It said, ”Wish you were here.”
It’s taken just ten thousand blicks
At half the speed of light;
I’ve had to dodge a million moons
And supernovae bright.
I’ve skirted round a black hole which
Exerted great attraction;
Had more misses with dark matter than
I really care to mention.
Passed Uranus and Saturn too
And Jupiter’s great sphere,
I spewed on Mars in passing but
At last I’m really here.
Oh! Earth is barren; scorching hot,
Its oceans  dry and bare.
Mankind has taken flight and gone
To stars I know not where.!
I see a message has been left,
“We sucked this planet dry;
So now we’re off to other worlds
To have another try.”
Great Gumbles of the glating winds,
Why could you not take care
Of this planet of your birth,
That once was blue and fair?

Good morning and welcome to Morning Prayer

The night has passed, and the day lies open before us;
let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence is kept.

As we rejoice in the gift of this new day,
so may the light of your presence,
O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you;
now and for ever.
Amen.

Breathe in
Breathe out
Be still…

Spirit of Truth
who reveals to us
the things of God we praise your name.

Spirit of Wisdom
who inspires the words
we ought to speak we praise your name.

Spirit of Power
who grants the courage
we need to act we praise your name.

Spirit of Love
who knows our nature and
loves us still we praise your name.
Amen

Presence
My soul longs for your presence, Lord.
When I turn my thoughts to You,
I find peace and contentment.

Freedom
Lord grant me the grace
to have freedom of the spirit.
Cleanse my heart and soul
so I may live joyously in your love.

Consciousness
Where do I sense hope, encouragement, and growth areas in my life?
By looking back over the last few months, I may be able to see which activities and occasions have produced rich fruit.
If I do notice such areas, I will determine to give those areas both time and space in the future.

THE WORD OF GOD

Matthew 9:1-8

And after getting into a boat Jesus crossed the sea and came to his own town. And just then some people were carrying a paralysed man lying on a bed. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.” Then some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man is blaspheming.” But Jesus, perceiving their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Stand up and walk’? But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” – he then said to the paralytic – “Stand up, take your bed and go to your home.” And he stood up and went to his home. When the crowds saw it, they were filled with awe, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to human beings.

WORD OF WISDOM

The great themes of the New Testament continue those of the Hebrew Bible, and one of those “great themes” is the Gospel itself. In ancient times, a “gospel” was a sharing of good news. Why did the Gospel writers choose to use the Greek word euangelion, which means “good news”? I think it’s because the story of Jesus was the news that transformed their lives. It was Good News of unconditional love, that we are loved, and that our entire lives can and should be based on the absolute love of God. That centers and grounds everything. What a tragedy that so much of Christianity has been made bad news, and has joined with the bad news of Empire, scapegoating, racism, war, sexism, and destruction of the planet. How far we must be from the experience of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John!

Matthew wants to show that Jesus has come to proclaim and to establish “the kingdom of God.” Jesus says, “Turn around! The kingdom of heaven is near” (Matthew 4:17). The realm of God is right here, right now, in the present tense. The relationship with God’s love that sets us free is in our midst. We have to have the humility and trust to turn around and see it.

Here’s how Brian McLaren describes it:

Jesus forms a movement of people who trust him and believe his message. They believe that they don’t have to wait for this or that to happen, but rather that they can begin living in a new and better way now, a way of life Jesus conveys by the pregnant phrase kingdom of God. Life for them now is about an interactive relationship—reconciled to God, reconciled to one another—and so they see their entire lives as an opportunity to make the beautiful music of God’s kingdom so that more and more people will be drawn into it, and so that the world will be changed by their growing influence.

It is a much greater message than just individual salvation, which has not gotten us very far at all.

Jesus preaches to “turn around,” or in Greek metanoia, which literally means to “change your mind.” It does not mean self-flagellation or being really down about ourselves, which is what the word “repent” has implied for most of us. It always involves an attitude of trust, letting go, and surrender. Originating with the Hebrew prophets, the biblical idea of metanoia is that of a change of mind and heart, a full turning around, a whole new transformation of one’s mentality and level of consciousness, more than “going to church” or following a new moral code.
