Prayers for the Day, Thursday

A reading from Lamentations

19 I remember my affliction and my wandering,
the bitterness and the gall.
20 I well remember them,
and my soul is downcast within me.
21 Yet this I call to mind
and therefore I have hope:

22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed,
for his compassions never fail.
23 They are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
24 I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my portion;
therefore I will wait for him.’

25 The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him,
to the one who seeks him;
26 it is good to wait quietly
for the salvation of the Lord.

Lamentations 3: 19–26 NIV®

Dear Lord, although we may be downcast and feel that we live through bitter times, help us to call to mind your steadfastness and your great love for us. You offer us new blessings every morning. We pray that we may always remember your great faithfulness, and that we may strive to be as faithful as we can be to you and to your dear Son our Saviour Jesus Christ.

Above all give us patience to wait quietly for your salvation and to listen quietly to the still, small voice of the Spirit as it guides us in your ways. Grant us endurance to hold fast to our faith in you. You provide for all our needs, so long as we keep faith with you. And while we wait, patiently, for your kingdom, may we keep ourselves busy doing what we can to further your work. May we share your love, which is for all your children, and the fruits of the Spirit, with all those we encounter during our days. We pray that our actions in our daily lives, may reveal your love in us, so that we and those about us may learn to love you more.

We gather these and all our prayers in the prayer that Jesus taught us:

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.

Amen
