Welcome

This is the day the Lord has made.
Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Amen

[Silence]

Gathering Prayer

Jesus, you are present at the meeting of our lives:
we come to worship.
Jesus, you listen to us, to the needs and concerns we bring:
we come to pray for one another.
Jesus, you bring healing and new purpose in our lives:
disturb and renew us with your Spirit.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Amen

Hymn: This is the day

This is the day [×2] that the Lord has made. [×2] We will rejoice [×2] and be glad in it. [×2] This is the day
that the Lord has made.
We will rejoice
and be glad in it.
This is the day
[×2] that the Lord has made.

This is the day
when he rose again …

This is the day
when the Spirit came …

Confession

Lord, we ask you to forgive us for the times we don’t hear Jesus calling us.
Son of David, have mercy on us.

The blind man was direct in his request;
forgive us for the times we go all round the houses,
and times we just can’t ‘see’ what is right in front of us.
Son of David, have mercy on us.

The blind man had good friends;
forgive us when we don’t accept help from friends,
and when we aren’t good friends to each other.
Son of David, have mercy on us.

Forgive us for ignoring people who really need our attention,
and for not seeing that we can help through you – and you can help through us.
Son of David, have mercy on us.

Forgive us when our faith is small and we don’t believe that it can heal us.
Son of David, have mercy on us.

Amen

Assurance of Forgiveness

Jesus asked Bartimaeus what he wanted from him.
Now he asks us what we want.
We have confessed our sins,
and now we want the assurance that God grants us pardon.

[Silence]

Jesus says, ‘Go; your faith has healed you.’

Amen

Prayer of the Week

All seeing God, you are so far beyond our understanding, yet you want to meet with us.
You call us into your presence, as the crowd called the blind man to come to Jesus.
We come to you now, mighty Lord, gathered expectantly,
ready to worship and learn from you.
May we have eyes open to see you and hearts willing to be seen by you.

Amen

Ministry of the Word

Psalm 126

1 When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,
we were like those who dreamed.
2 Our mouths were filled with laughter,
our tongues with songs of joy.
Then it was said among the nations,
‘The Lord has done great things for them.’
3 The Lord has done great things for us,
and we are filled with joy.

4 Restore our fortunes, Lord,
like streams in the Negev.
5 Those who sow with tears
will reap with songs of joy.
6 Those who go out weeping,
carrying seed to sow,
will return with songs of joy,
carrying sheaves with them.

This is the word of the Lord.

Mark 10: 46–52

Blind Bartimaeus Receives his Sight

46 Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means ‘son of Timaeus’), was sitting by the roadside begging. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, ‘Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!’

48 Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, ‘Son of David, have mercy on me!’

49 Jesus stopped and said, ‘Call him.’

So they called to the blind man, ‘Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.’ 50 Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.

51 ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ Jesus asked him.

The blind man said, ‘Rabbi, I want to see.’

52 ‘Go,’ said Jesus, ‘your faith has healed you.’ Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.

This is the Gospel of Christ.

Meditation

Choral Response by Children’s Choir

Affirmation of Faith

Let us declare our faith.

We believe in God the Father,
from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named.

We believe in God the Son,
who lives in our hearts through faith, and fills us with his love.

We believe in God the Holy Spirit,
who strengthens us with power from on high.

We believe in one God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit

Amen

Prayers and Intercessions

Followed by:

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.

Amen

The Peace

Hymn: Give me joy in my heart

Give me joy in my heart, keep me praising,
give me joy in my heart, I pray.
Give me joy in my heart, keep me praising.
Keep me praising till the end of day.

Sing hosanna! Sing hosanna!
Sing hosanna to the King of kings!
Sing hosanna! Sing hosanna!
Sing hosanna to the King!

Give me peace in my heart, keep me resting,
give me peace in my heart, I pray.
Give me peace in my heart, keep me resting.
Keep me resting till the end of day.

Sing hosanna! …

Give me love in my heart, keep me serving,
give me love in my heart, I pray.
Give me love in my heart, keep me serving.
Keep me serving till the end of day.

Sing hosanna! …

Give me oil in my lamp, keep me burning,
give me oil in my lamp, I pray.
Give me oil in my lamp, keep me burning.
Keep me burning to the end of day.

Sing hosanna! …

Haydn’s Creation: A Concert for COP26

7.30 pm Sunday, 7 November 2021
in the Church of St Peter & St Paul, Newport Pagnell

While the world’s leaders are meeting in Glasgow at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26, 31 October – 12 November 2021), Haydn’s beautiful music will help us to meditate on the wonder of God’s creation and reflect on the catastrophic harm we are doing to it through climate change.

Tickets £20, £15 (under 18’s £5) available online at https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/cornerstone-music (booking fee applies), email boyntonmusic@btinternet.com, Tel/text 07961 348697, Post (SAE): Cornerstone Music, Box Office, 11 Burewelle, Two Mile Ash, MK8 8LS.

The concert is a Cornerstone church event and all members of Cornerstone are welcome to attend, even if they can’t afford a ticket. If you are a member of Cornerstone and would like to attend but for whatever reason are not in a position to buy a ticket, you are invited to contact David Chapman (Church Clerk, david@dachapman.free-online.co.uk) or Mark Okor (Church Administrator, mark.okor@cornerstonemk.co.uk), who will give you a ticket for free: no questions asked! You can also attend for free if you are able and willing to be one of the two or three stewards needed for the concert, so contact boyntonmusic@btinternet.com if you would like to volunteer to do that.

However, enough tickets need to be sold to cover the expenses of the concert. Adrian Boynton and the singers of the Chamber Choir give their time free, and indeed make a contribution to the costs themselves, but the soloists and the members of the orchestra are professional musicians who are paid (they need to make a living). There is also a small charge for the use of the church in Newport Pagnell. If the sale of tickets raises more than is needed for the expenses the surplus will be donated to church funds. If not enough is raised, the shortfall will be covered from the reserves of Cornerstone Music.

Offering

Final Prayer

Lord God, bless us and keep us.
And may we be a blessing to others in all we think and say and do.

Go gently and joyfully in a spirit of truth,
as witnesses of God’s love.
May God watch over you,
Jesus walk with you,
and the Spirit give you courage.

Go forth and give new life!
Thanks be to God!

Hymn: This little light of mine

This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine. [×3] let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

This light that shines is the light of love,
lights the darkness from above.
It shines on me and it shines on you,
and shows what the power of love can do.
I’m gonna shine my light both far and near,
I’m gonna shine my light both bright and clear.
Where there’s a dark corner in this land
I’m gonna let this little light shine.

This little light of mine, …

On Monday he gave me the gift of love,
Tuesday peace came from above.
On Wednesday he told me to have more faith,
on Thursday he gave me a little more grace.
Friday he told me just to watch and pray,
Saturday he told me just what to say.
On Sunday he gave me the power divine
to let my little light shine.

This little light of mine, …
