I Refuse to Report Bugs to Their Creator
by Brayan Salinas

During roll call
a black beetle
wanders to the sink,
near my toothbrush,
and I say,
“Poor thing,
I better let you go.”

My father says,
“You better smash that thing
before it multiplies.”
I think he says the
same about me.

I lie awake at night
and think
about crunchy leaves
crushed in the autumn.

My mother sees
six red ants
running around
the loaf of bread
anticipating their breakfast.
She says to me,
“Get those things off
the table.”

My sister panics
at the sight of a spider.
She runs to the kitchen
and screams bloody murder.
I remind her,
“We don’t find
scary things
scary anymore.”

My mother flicks
the grasshopper off  her book.
She asks how I am doing.
I lie to her
and say,
“I’m doing quite all right,
I smashed a bug
with my shoe.
We all do
what we don’t want to do.”

I see a cockroach
on the ground.
“Gregor,” I whisper,
“you better run fast.”
He says to me,
“I only need to run faster
than you.”

Good morning and welcome to Morning Prayer

The night has passed, and the day lies open before us;
let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence is kept.

As we rejoice in the gift of this new day,
so may the light of your presence, O God,
set our hearts on fire with love for you;
now and for ever.
Amen.

Breathe in

Breathe out

Be still…

Spirit of Truth
who reveals to us the things of God
we praise your name.

Spirit of Wisdom
who inspires the words we ought to speak
we praise your name.

Spirit of Power
who grants the courage we need to act
we praise your name

Spirit of Love
who knows our nature and loves us still
we praise your name.
Amen

Presence

To be present is to arrive as one is and open up to the other.
At this instant, as I arrive here, God is present waiting for me.
God always arrives before me, desiring to connect with me
even more than my most intimate friend.
I take a moment and greet my loving God.

Freedom

I try to let go of concerns and worries
that may be dragging me down at this present moment.
I place any concerns I have in Gods hands
– at least for these few minutes of prayer.

Consciousness

Where do I sense hope, encouragement,

and growth areas in my life?
By looking back over the last few months,
I may be able to see which activities
and occasions have produced rich fruit.
If I do notice such areas, I will determine
to give those areas both time and space in the future.

THE WORD OF GOD

Mark 1:14-20

Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee,
proclaiming the good news of God, and saying,
“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near;
repent, and believe in the good news.”
As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee,
he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a
net into the sea – for they were fishermen.
And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.”
And immediately they left their nets and followed him.
As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee
and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets.
Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee
in the boat with the hired men, and followed him.

WORDS OF WISDOM

“As we accompany Jesus through the gospels, we are present at one dramatic meeting after another.
One person after another experiences a mysterious power in Jesus that, from this moment, changes the course of his or her life.
If we are fully present at the moment when we read such a narrative, we ourselves experience the liberating power of this awakening.”
Father Bruno Barnhart

Perhaps the most deadening aspect of our Christianity . . . is that we live it with twenty-twenty hindsight. We know the story. We know how the plot comes out. We know who the winners are. . . . The Bible contains the complete and divinely authorized biography of Jesus and furnishes the complete guide to what [we] should do to become his disciple. Everything needed for [our] personal salvation is right there. . . .

We’re living in an era right now which some would call a major paradigm shift, where there’s an opportunity as perhaps there hasn’t been before to really open up the core questions again and ask, “What is it that we mean by ‘Christianity’? What is this filter [or veil] that we’re looking through? Who is this Master that we profess and confess in our life as we call ourselves Christian?” . . .

When we approach the [Jesus] story with the attitude, “I’ve heard that already, I know what that means,” we fall asleep rather than allowing ourselves to be shocked awake. . . . For all such spiritual sleepwalking bypasses that crucial first step, that moment when the heart has to find its way not though external conditioning but through a raw immediacy of presence. Only there—in “the cave of the heart,” as the mystics are fond of calling it—does a person come in contact with his or her own direct knowingness. And only out of this direct knowingness is sovereignty born, one’s own inner authority.
